*What General Anderson told Congress and why Freetown can't explain it away*
On 20th May 2026, during a House Intelligence Committee hearing in Washington, D.C., General Dagvin Anderson, commander of U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), confirmed that Mexican cartels were directly involved in the record breaking cocaine seizure tied to Sierra Leone. Speaking publicly, General Anderson stated that the drugs, worth approximately $1 billion, were destined for the Middle East, Europe and the United States. He also revealed that Mexican cartel members were present at 11 of 12 labs interdicted in the region.
This testimony from the highest levels of the U.S. military pulls the carpet from under the Sierra Leone government's defence for three reasons.
To start with, it really damages the government's *credibility* . Freetown has been spinning small lies about things like company registration and the counts of cargo and crew. A three-star U.S. general has now come out and said, on the record and under congressional oath, that Mexican cartels were behind this shipment. The international community is going to trust AFRICOM over press releases from a government that’s caught in contradictions.
Next, it increases Sierra Leone's involvement in Global Drug Trafficking. This isn’t just a European drug bust anymore, far from it. General Anderson confirmed that the drugs were headed for the Middle East, Europe, and the United States, and that cartel members were spotted at almost a dozen labs in the area. Sierra Leone is now officially recognised as a hub for Mexican cartels operating in Africa, which is a huge hit to its international reputation.
*Third, the United States is now directly involved* . The Arconian seizure was based on a joint tip from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and Dutch police. With General Anderson's public confirmation, the U.S. has the political and legal cover to act. This opens the door for OFAC sanctions, asset freezes, travel bans against specific Sierra Leonean officials, and a formal designation of Sierra Leone as a "major drug transit country".
Clearly, the world has moved past Freetown's denials. The Netherlands and the UK are coordinating sanctions. Interpol is already on the ground. And now, the United States has publicly tied Mexican cartels to a cocaine shipment that originated in Sierra Leone. The government can no longer hide. The evidence is now a matter of international criminal record.
